Rain delays
India appeared poised to notch an historic win at Edgbaston, but rain interrupted what could have been one of cricket’s great finales. With 27,000 spectators present at Edgbaston on the final day, however, India were left disappointed and disappointed as its series-levelling win seemed on the verge of happening.
England’s Harry Brook and Ollie Pope had both batted unbeaten with 25(15), when play was stopped after nearly an hour due to umpire interference. England were looking for 536 runs to win and set a world record fourth-innings run chase in Test history.
Edgbaston’s outfield resembled an endless swimming pool while water puddles formed in its covers area, but soon enough the rain subsided and players resumed their warm-up routines under bright sunshine.
After a brief delay, the covers were lifted and play began at 12:40 pm local time (1140 GMT). With only 10 of 90 overs completed so far, India struggled to take wickets against an England side that held an overwhelming advantage.
India appeared doomed, as Harry Brook was left on 19(16) and Joe Root on 6(16), yet Akash Deep produced a stunning last-ditch effort by hitting an inside edge through to rattle the timbers and leave England captain Steven Plunkett trailing by an alarming margin.
Jos Buttler fell victim to an outswinger from Mohammed Siraj and was caught in the gully for 56. Siraj then took another six-wicket haul for India and looked set for historic success; but in reply, England managed to score 407 thanks in large part to Gill’s first-innings masterclass and Smith and Overton’s stand of over 300 runs in their second innings. With this series now locked at 1-1 going into Wednesday’s final Test match at The Oval – starting at 10:30am BST; Sky Sports Cricket and Sky Sports Action will provide coverage in both parts of England of this captivating five-match series!
Shubman Gill’s maiden Test century
Shubman Gill produced a masterful performance when given the difficult task of leading India against England at Edgbaston, leading his side to an innings score of 310-5 at stumps. Gill showed great control throughout his innings, reaching his maiden Test century with an unbeaten score of 114 not out; it also ranks him ahead of modern-day legends Sunil Gavaskar, Rahul Dravid and Virat Kohli when it comes to highest scores by Indian captains away from home.
Gill continued his good form from his first innings by scoring an outstanding 141 not out in just 72 deliveries and going on to form two partnerships of 91 runs with Nitish Kumar Reddy (43) and then another one with Dhruv Jurel (47). From resumed on 20, Gill hit 16 elegant boundaries and two sixes before raising his bat amid cheers from a near-packed crowd.
Gill continued his impressive batting in the final session, assisted by patient team-mates at both ends. In doing so, he reached his double century from just 184 balls while remaining unperturbed by Washington Sundar’s rare attempt at spinner’s leg-spin.
Sundar was able to turn back slightly into Woakes but not enough for it to cause any major disruptions in his innings. Sundar’s next over proved more challenging as he pitched short to Woakes who attempted a pull shot but the ball flew high up into the air, finding Mohammed Siraj at silly mid-on’s gloves instead.
India’s batsmen finally began to find their groove after an initially slow start on Day 2, thanks to Jadeja’s fiery shots that brought some momentum into their innings. Jadeja smashed one through the covers before using his feet to loft another over long-on for a boundary as India reached their midway point in their innings – becoming only the fourth Indian captain after Gavaskar, Sachin Tendulkar and Kohli to record consecutive centuries in their initial two matches as captain.
Akash Deep’s five-wicket haul
Akash Deep’s performance will long be remembered. His right-arm pacer’s nip and skiddiness caused England batsmen to struggle getting into their groove, ultimately finishing the match with ten wickets under his belt and cementing himself into Test cricket history.
Young spin bowler Jasprit Bumrah made an immediate and dramatic impact upon replacing him, taking 4/88 in his opening innings and becoming a serious threat with new ball bowling in both innings of this Test match.
He then repeated this feat again at Edgbaston for another five-wicket haul – making history by becoming the first debutant ever to achieve this in Test cricket! Now known throughout India, 25-year-old Agarwal has quickly become one of the nation’s household names and it is easy to understand why.
Siraj opened his spell by trapping Ben Stokes lbw. Siraj delivered a short delivery which hit Stokes square on, prompting him to try playing it with his front foot but was caught by Siraj at first slip – raising an umpire’s finger before reviewing and ultimately being ruled out.
Akash Deep continues his impressive form with another tight over. While Deep’s pacer gets some bounce on the ball, Chris Woakes struggles to gain any edge off it. An angled delivery nearly took out England captain’s off-stump!
Akash Deep produces an outstanding inswinger which zips between bat and pad, nearly hitting the outside edge of the bat but Ravindra Jadeja at short midwicket saves it with some impressive fielding at short midwicket.
Mohammed Siraj delivers an over that Brydon Carse smashes for four. Unfortunately for England, first slip KL Rahul fails to hold onto it, dealing a devastating blow and falling six wickets behind.
A historic win
India finally breaks 58 years of heartache at Edgbaston as Shubman Gill led them with an outstanding maiden hundred, while Akash Deep and Mohammed Siraj provided finishing touches to this spectacular win that will go down as one of history’s great performances.
Washington Sundar’s short ball to Jamie Smith had some extra bounce, taking away from its outside edge and rolling along the rough until reaching short midwicket where Mohammed Siraj took an easy catch.
Brydon Carse and Josh Tongue have delayed India’s celebration. Jadeja pitches on the grass and attempts to play an over-throw but misses. The umpire initially raises an LBW appeal but ball tracking shows it hit Jadeja’s thigh pad instead, making LBW appeal unnecessary at this stage for England. It will take all they have at this stage for them to make an impressionful showing against India.
