England opener Ben Duckett has been given a rest during England’s three T20 matches against South Africa and their subsequent series against Ireland, with Sam Curran joining his squad instead.
Meanwhile, Luke Wood produced an exceptional diving catch to dismiss Dewald Brevis off the first ball of the fifth over, marking one of the finest moments of the match. The spectacular fielding effort quickly became one of the standout highlights involving the England Cricket Team Vs South African National Cricket Team Players, showcasing England’s sharp fielding and intensity on the field.

ODI squad
England cricket team boasts a proud legacy of white-ball success. One of the first Test nations and inaugural ODI participants, they won three Men’s T20 World Cup championships and four Champions Trophy trophies prior to 1971. Additionally, their current ODI squad features several experienced veterans alongside rising stars complemented by an expansive bowling attack.
After their exciting five-Test series against India, England are ready to turn their focus back towards limited-overs cricket. Beginning September 2, they will face South Africa in three ODIs and three T20Is; these games will then be followed up with Vitality IT20 against Ireland starting September 17 in Malahide.
Eoin Morgan leads England ODI as both their most-capped and second highest run-scorer, known for being fearless batsman who takes risks and hits sixes with ease. Ben Stokes is another key ODI all-rounder with an outstanding strike rate and prolific bowling lineup, having been named ODI player of the year 2022 and holding many England records including several run-scoring records as well as wicket-taking achievements. Other notable ODI players for England include Paul Collingwood who played second most ODIs alongside being one of England’s leading run scorers and wicket takers respectively.
Jofra Archer was recognized for his performances during India’s five-Test series against South Africa by earning selection for an ODI and T20 series against South Africa. Archer earned praise for his ability to alter games using both new and old balls; now, he will add even greater momentum to a side featuring some of the top spinners globally.
ODI Squad This squad comprises five members from the side which won the ICC Champions Trophy earlier this year, along with an innovative bowling unit comprising Kwena Maphaka and Sam Curran as fast bowlers as well as all-rounder Jos Buttler.
T20 squad
The England squad for the 2026 T20 World Cup features both experienced players and rising talents. Phil Salt and Jos Buttler will likely lead England’s batting attack, while wicketkeeper Harry Brook will serve as an anchor to their middle order alongside young talents Jacob Bethell, Tom Banton and Will Jacks. Adil Rashid will lead their bowling department which boasts the ability to turn any game on its head within just a few overs.
Jofra Archer’s inclusion in England’s white-ball series against South Africa is welcome news for him as Rob Key has shown some cautious optimism regarding Archer’s recovery from elbow surgery, so his inclusion is all the more encouraging. They will play three Metro Bank ODIs and three Vitality IT20s before Archer returns home for England cricket’s return home tour against India and Pakistan later in 2018.
England’s main strength in T20 cricket lies in their powerplay firepower, with Salt and Buttler capable of turning games on in less than six overs. Furthermore, England possess an abundance of all-rounders such as Sam Curran as well as an experienced spin bowling department including Rashid, Liam Dawson, Rehan Ahmed, and Luke Wright to produce some exciting bowling attacks.
Key will hope that England’s young talent can help the team reach the semi-finals, taking another important step toward regaining top status after losing the Ashes to Australia. While failure to reach the final could prove disastrous for England’s current set-up, they should still be able to rebound and compete for top position during this tournament.
England T20 World Cup squad combines experience and youth, and is expected to perform strongly against South Africa across all formats of cricket. T20Is and ODIs will take place at various venues throughout England including The Oval. ODI tickets for these matches can be bought online while T20I tickets can be obtained from The Oval box office – with ticket prices for ODI matches beginning at PS40; T20I tickets cost PS10 less.
ODI coach
The South African cricket team, commonly referred to as the Proteas, represents their nation in limited overs international cricket. Comprised of 24 players–eight batters, nine bowlers and three all-rounders–it is led by Temba Bavuma as captain/batsman while fast bowler Kagiso Rabada and wicketkeeper-batsman Aiden Markram also play on this squad. At present the Proteas are in preparations for their tri-nation series against Pakistan and New Zealand that starts 10 February at Gaddafi Stadium Lahore.
Adil Shahukri has been appointed as ODI coach of England cricket team. Adil takes over for John Bracewell. Adil is an ideal choice, having served as fast bowler for South African team before working as batting coach there and being familiar with Protea requirements.
Shahukri has gained invaluable experience while leading the Proteas. This experience should prove beneficial when taking over as England coach and is expected to enhance their performances in ODIs.
He will focus on strengthening both fielding and batting techniques for the team, while making them more aggressive on attack resulting in more run-out opportunities. Bowling coaches JP Duminy and Eric Simons as well as batting coach Phil Salt will assist him.
Sam Curran will make his long-awaited return to England’s ODI side for Wednesday’s opening T20 against South Africa at Cardiff. Brendon McCullum added white-ball coaching duties last November, yet now Sam should become an established part of their squad.
Sonny Baker will make his England debut during this game after becoming one of Manchester Originals’ stand-out bowlers at the Hundred, taking nine wickets at an average pace of 90mph and taking nine wickets for them during that tournament. Expect him to be an effective weapon for the home side during their Powerplay, hoping to emulate fellow English fast bowler Jimmy Anderson who became a key part of their ODI squad last summer.
T20 coach
Brendon McCullum looks set to remain England’s all-format coach after their close semi-final defeat by India, even following increased scrutiny this winter due to Ashes disaster and subsequent off-field incidents. Following mounting criticism, but his position may yet remain secure given he appears set for another contract extension to manage England white-ball team backed by captain Ben Stokes, Harry Brook and Joe Root – three key members of which support his retention as head coach.
On Thursday at Edgbaston, England recorded their highest ever T20 win against South Africa by defeating them by 158 runs – but even that wasn’t enough to lift them from the bottom half. Prior to that innings starting Phil Salt and Jos Buttler shared in a record 126 run partnership which set off England’s victory tally.
But when Ryan Rickelton was caught at short third and Lhuan-dre Pretorius top-edged to Luke Wood at midwicket, England’s chances of an historic win began to slip away. Before long, Jos Buttler, Sam Billings and Dewald Bruvis all misfired from close range, eventually contributing to an innings collapse.
Michael Vaughan took great pleasure in mocking South Africa after their surprising semi-final loss against New Zealand at the T20 World Cup, labelling them “the stupidest team in the tournament”. This comment came in response to their one knockout match victory during this competition.
Proteas have had an up and down year since winning the 2011 ICC World Cup; losing all knockout matches in major tournaments since. But there is no question they have improved since starting out this tournament.
T20 coaching can be both rewarding and difficult; this high-profile position demands much time and dedication from its occupant. An ideal T20 coach must inspire their players while creating an environment conducive to success; therefore it is crucial that he or she has an avid passion for cricket.
