1. 2012 IPL Final
At the conclusion of the league stage, only four teams ever met in an IPL final for the first time ever – yet this would be different. Chennai Super Kings were looking for their third win to put themselves in good stead heading into playoffs; Kolkata Knight Riders still needed their inaugural victory of 2019.
Chepauk provided ideal batting conditions, while dew made bowling difficult. CSK won the toss and elected to field first; Varun Chakravarthy came in as their second change for them.
Anshul Kamboj begins well for Kolkata Knight Riders by getting some seam movement away from Finn Allen as he attempts to walk at him but instead receives a thick edge that settles with cover-point – taking them 13-1 in 1.4 overs.
Ajinkya Rahane steps up next, hoping to strike through the covers with his first strike. Unfortunately, however, the ball comes back too short and he misses completely; however, as his teammates don’t react instantly he gets an extra life and takes one single to make it 14-1.
Ajinkya Rahane and Sunil Narine attempt to increase the run rate, but are only able to score two runs off Kartik Tyagi’s next over. He bowls a full-toss that goes past Dewald Brevis who hits it over long-on for six. Analysis: 4-0-35-2.
2. 2021 IPL Final
The final of IPL 2021 was an exciting, nail-biting contest between Mumbai Indians and Delhi Daredevils that ended with them victorious by one run. Both teams remained on edge as soon as the last ball had been bowled. Both games showcased excellent cricket; it was great seeing IPL back after its long hiatus! With season 11 set to kick off in April 2022.
KKR had lost three of their previous four matches before this contest but were buoyed by Sanju Samson’s century against Delhi Capitals in their previous game. Conversely, CSK were struggling at the bottom of the table and had won only one out of their four contests prior to this matchup.
Even though Chennai experienced an uncomfortable heat wave on Monday evening, that should not be taken as an excuse to give either team an easy win. Both have much riding on this contest – whoever wins it will move closer towards earning their playoff slot.
At the toss, KKR wisely elected to field first given Chepauk’s difficult batting surface which has hosted many successful defences over recent times.
Khaleel Ahmed had started well, but was undone by poor footwork in the final over. While defending a short leg-side boundary he allowed Ayush Mhatre to hit two sixes off him.
Dhoni initially raised eyebrows when he signed Robin Uthappa for CSK, but he has proven himself an invaluable addition to Dad’s Army with scores such as 63 against Sunrisers Hyderabad in Qualifier 2 and his 15-ball 31 to help CSK to victory against Mumbai Indians here as evidence of this. Robin’s experience and skill are integral parts of what this CSK side represents.
3. 2025 IPL Final
The 2025 IPL Final was one of the most exciting in its history and an appropriate culmination to an intense rivalry that produced memorable individual and team achievements. Manvinder Bisla’s 89-ball innings was a key contributor in KKR’s victory, while Faf du Plessis’ masterful 86 powered CSK to their fourth crown. Sunil Narine’s double role of both showing his attacking prowess while picking up three wickets made for another memorable momentous moment during this match.
Both teams have competed in 23 IPL finals to date, with KKR winning 12 of these matches and CSK eight. Since 2011, when Qualifier 1 began being used, its winner has won all eight finals as well as 15 overall playoff matches since this format was implemented.
This head-to-head data shows a rivalry that has long been marked by long-term competition between CSK and KKR at Eden Gardens. While CSK leads overall head-to-head records, their rivals have historically had more of an edge there.
Sunil Narine leads all-time wicket takers in this fixture with 23 scalps; his mystery spin and ability to thwart KKR momentum during middle overs has become an integral part of this rivalry. Ravindra Jadeja’s tight left-arm spin and sharp fielding has also presented batsmen from both teams with challenges; MS Dhoni has made their clashes at Eden Gardens some of the most entertaining finishes ever witnessed in IPL history, often turning games in CSK’s favor.
4. 2009 IPL Final
Chennai Super Kings will meet Kolkata Knight Riders at MA Chidambaram Stadium for an intense IPL clash, looking for their first win since four games and hope to gain ground on top half of table, while KKR are struggling at bottom end due to poor record.
Game begins quietly as both sides find their footing in Chennai’s heat. Ruturaj Gaikwad falls to Khaleel Ahmed for one in the third over and Ruturaj Gaikwad drops an easy catch at long-on off Khaleel Ahmed; thereafter CSK bowlers begin dominating middle overs of innings.
Sanju Samson then unleashed an impressive run-scoring spree. He hit three fours off Vaibhav Arora before the latter finally caught up with him. A bouncer went straight to midwicket’s fielder, while yet another bouncer saw an early cut fly over long-on for six to give CSK a total score of 67/2 in their powerplay overs.
Akeal Hosein bowls an impressive spell against KKR, conceding only 14 runs over three overs to tighten their noose. Unfortunately for him though, in his fourth over Angkrish Raghuvanshi produces a well-timed pull to long-on that beats him and ends the spell prematurely.
KKR are determined to get back on the right track, and they get a tremendous boost as Varun Chakravarthy returns from injury as replacement for Navdeep Saini and provides some much-needed fresh legs to their struggling team. Unfortunately though, Dewald Brevis strikes once again by hitting one into the roof of the stand for six and spoiling a final powerplay over.

CSK have taken advantage of CSK’s depth in batting and MS Dhoni’s tactical nous to claim an overwhelming advantage at home, while their performance on neutral grounds has become more even (Source: The Cricket Stadiums). However, M.A. Chidambaram Stadium remains particularly tough for them to visit with just seven victories from 12 matches there won by them during this period (Source: The Cricket Stadiums).
In the 2020 IPL Final, KKR posted an impressive total of 158 for six in 20 overs thanks to an outstanding opening stand between Gautam Gambhir and Brendon McCullum of 87 runs. CSK managed to keep in contention throughout their innings by regularly losing wickets; even after Michael Hussey and Murali Vijay had both been dismissed it was set to go down to the wire; with nine needed from final over and nine deliveries remaining Dwayne Bravo hit Rajat Bhatia slower ball for six off delivery to seal an exciting victory for CSK; many regard this matchup as one of most exciting IPL Final ever played!
