England vs Senegal
England were jeered off the pitch following their 3-1 defeat against Senegal on Tuesday – exactly one year and one day before World Cup kicks off in Russia. Even though this friendly was meant to be friendly, its outcome still embarrassed Thomas Tuchel who took his first loss as England manager. Tuchel insisted it wasn’t time for alarm yet although England have had two disappointing performances recently as well as their terrible record against African sides.
Senegal made their presence felt against England in World Cup qualifying on Saturday with a robust win, making life difficult for their hosts. Harry Kane gave England an early lead from close range before goals from Ismaila Sarr, Habib Diarra and Cheikh Sabaly ensured victory – though England’s Jude Bellingham thought he had levelled from a corner kick but his goal was disallowed due to Levi Colwill handballing in the 84th minute.
Gareth Southgate’s men showed some encouraging signs, however. While Senegal had more shots, England were more accurate and created more chances than their visitors – an impressive performance which bodes well for next year’s tournament in Russia.
Kyle Walker was an individual letdown, as the Manchester City right-back struggled to manage Senegal’s lively and mobile attack. He was easily beaten for both goals scored away from home while failing to make a significant defensive contribution. Gary Cahill too proved disappointing due to lack of opportunities.
No one should panic too early about England’s World Cup prospects; much will depend on how quickly and deeply their recent troubles can be rectified before tournament play begins. There should be plenty of time for this process before tournament commences and it appears they might not be so far off from an exciting campaign as some might believe.
England Team Lineups
The England national football team represents England at international men’s football. It is managed by the Football Association – England’s governing body of football – and affiliated with European governing body UEFA. They compete regularly at major international tournaments such as FIFA World Cup and UEFA Euro.
England have provided Thomas Tuchel with two auditions this summer with their 1-1 draw against Uruguay and 1-0 loss against Japan providing final opportunities for hopefuls to showcase themselves and secure a spot on the plane to Russia.
First and foremost, England manager Gareth Southgate will seek a strong spine. Players with experience from major tournaments should be selected along with those freed of such expectations; those fulfilling that latter criterion could even find themselves included as squad members.
At full-back positions there remain some doubts. Ashley Young has struggled at Manchester United this season and may well be overlooked if he struggled against more physical competition in Russia. Ryan Shawcross likewise has not made an impression since returning from injury absence.
Right-back appears more secure. Luke Shaw has extensive international experience from two Euros and one World Cup; Gary Cahill or Phil Jones will likely serve as his partner on defence; Joe Hart in goal will complete their preferred pairing.
Ben Chilwell will be hoping to win his maiden cap for England. His performances for Leeds this season have been outstanding and there is every possibility he could be selected as one of their World Cup squad members.
At center-back, there are no certainties for Tuchel; his options could include Harry Maguire or John Stones competing for places, with Tom Hall or O’Reilly as a possible back-up option. Dan Burn could also feature but will need to prove he can handle this level of competition first.
Midfield will present some challenges; James Henderson will hope for a recall after missing out on Southgate’s last squad due to his move to Brentford, having large-tournament experience and versatility to play both positions six or eight. Furthermore, there will likely be competition among Anderson, Wharton and themselves for that all-important number six spot.

Roy Keane lashed out at England’s defense after their disappointing showing against Senegal at City Ground on Wednesday. In particular, 96-cap defender Kyle Walker came in for criticism as his attempts were slow in stopping Senegal from scoring their two early goals – calling into question England’s response in response to Senegal’s impressive performance.
