Second Match
In 2008, the inaugural IPL final remains one of the most riveting contests ever witnessed, as Rajasthan Royals led by Shane Warne edged out Chennai Super Kings (CSK) with one final ball to seal an epic battle that would become a longstanding rivalry. It remains one of the greatest spectacles ever witnessed on an IPL pitch to this day.
The Royals started their season strong, winning four out of their opening four games and leading the table by an enormous margin. Unfortunately, inconsistency soon caught up with them when two out of their next three matches ended in defeat and dropped them down the table to fourth place without guarantee of playoff participation.
CSK were in incredible form throughout the tournament, compiling 13 wins against two losses for an unblemished 13-1 mark. But M.S. Dhoni’s men were on the verge of finishing bottom when they faced Rajasthan on Tuesday at Arun Jaitley Stadium; victory here could prevent their franchise’s first-ever bottom finish ever.
Chennai Super Kings have only six points on the board and any loss could prove devastating for them – yet Royals remain in relegation danger so both teams view this game as must-wins.
The Royals’ inconsistency has been at the core of their issues this season. A mix of youth players and new faces have caused numerous errors that have infuriated fans; many have demanded changes in leadership and how the team operates but were met with indifference from management.

Jos Buttler broke two IPL records during his match against Delhi Daredevils; first by scoring an unbeaten fifty from 18 balls to break the fastest fifty in IPL history; and secondly by equalling Virender Sehwag’s record of most consecutive fifties in an IPL tournament – for both feats he was later awarded Man of the Match.
Rajasthan’s bowlers also excelled, with young pacer Siddharth Trivedi and spinner Munaf Patel both taking two wickets each in this match. Later in their next encounter against Mumbai Indians, Rajasthan beat them by eight wickets – marking their greatest ever defeat at Sawai Mansingh Stadium.

RedBird Capital Partners purchased 15% stake for approximately $37.5 million while Manoj Badale’s Emerging Media then increased their ownership stake up to 65%.
On 19 February 2025, the Royals sold majority shareholding to an American investment group for $1.635 billion, the single most important transaction ever completed in Indian cricket history.
