Harry Brook’s triple hundred
Harry Brook’s triple century was the match-winner for England. The batsman scored 317 runs to become one of only a select few Englishmen over 30 years to score such an feat and put Pakistan on their heels with his impressive batting. Harry also helped set up England’s victory in the second Test match.
Joe Root and Brook combined for an unprecedented 454-run fourth wicket partnership against South Africa – making history by being England’s highest ever 454 run partnership for any wicket against another side for any wicket! They reached this landmark using only 310 balls; less than twice the amount Virender Sehwag used against South Africa back in 2008.
Abrar Ahmed became the first Pakistan bowler since 2009 to achieve this feat on debut for England, taking five wickets on debut for them and earning himself selection in their team for their third Test match against Australia. Ahmed made an immediate impact during his debut innings by picking up four maiden wickets before adding four more in subsequent overs – earning his place on that side for further cricket!
Pakistan were able to put up an admirable fight against England despite an inadequate start, scoring 556 runs in their first innings and 267 in their second. Unfortunately, their batsmen could not stop an onslaught of runs from England that saw them fall by an innings loss.
England defeated Pakistan to secure an impressive 2-0 series victory, their best victory ever on Pakistani soil. Both teams put on an excellent display of cricket throughout this epic contest; both had great action-packed matches featuring thrilling batsmen from each side.
It was easy to see why so many fans were excited by this match’s spectacular spectacle, with memorable moments aplenty throughout its entirety. Pakistani batsmen faced off against English bowlers throughout, offering up many outstanding batting feats as well as aggressive bowling spells from both teams but eventually England came out victorious in this battle of attrition.
Noman Ali’s eight wickets
Pakistan’s frontline spinners put England on the back foot from day one of the second Test in Multan, never relenting once they were behind. Harry Brook’s record-breaking innings in the first innings will long be remembered but Noman Ali’s outstanding eight wicket haul led Pakistan to an outright 152 run victory – marking their first home win since 2021 and also representing an unprecedented career-best for this 29-year old spinner.
Noman took six or more wickets for Pakistan for a sixth successive Test innings, equaling his highest haul ever across any format and bringing him level with Rangana Herath on a list of most prolific spinners ever seen in Test cricket – in fact, only an inconsistency has prevented Noman from becoming all-time leading wicket-taker in Tests!
Pakistan’s spinners proved highly effective on a track that provided lots of turn. Kamran Ghulam scored an unbeaten century on debut to help Pakistan post 366 runs in their first innings; Saim Ayub scored 77 to give Pakistan an early edge against England batting, with only Ben Duckett managing to hit one hundred during this match-up.
Noman and Sajid Khan’s spin bowling proved too much for England in the second innings. Together they shared all 20 England wickets between them – including three hat-tricks from Noman himself! Noman enjoyed his best ever performance in a Test match; and also took his maiden hat-trick against any team other than India!
On Saturday, both teams will come back together in one final Test set for Lord’s. This match promises to be an exhilarating end to an action-packed series and provide both teams an opportunity to showcase what they can do at home ground as well as being a true test of character between rivalries.
Ali Raza’s four wickets
England tends to divide over their love of cricket; there are diehards who vehemently oppose it while fair-weather fans barely manage enough enthusiasm for watching matches; then there are those in between, like myself, who will happily watch episodes of Sherlock or The Flash before getting stuck into an exciting Test match session.
Pakistan’s dominating second innings performance might cause many cricket enthusiasts to believe the game had died, but they would be wrong. England and Pakistan will meet once more in their 2024 Test series finale and their first innings showed why this rivalry remains so compelling.
Each England vs Pakistan scorecard tells a compelling narrative of determination, passion and the untold beauty of the game. From Harry Brook’s impressive innings in the opening Test match against Pakistan to Noman Ali’s devilish spin in the second, every game provides proof that this rivalry goes well beyond slow batting and dull fielding alone.
Though England won the 2024 series 2-0, their rivalry will live and flourish into the future. England’s consistent play beat Pakistan’s unpredictable approach while both teams produced world-class talent throughout. There remains plenty to look forward to for both teams moving forward.
Brendon McCullum made headlines upon being appointed England all-formats coach in September 2024 when he set out to cheer up “miserable” Jos Buttler. Though Buttler’s Champions Trophy exit ultimately was due to an inexcusable lack of familiarity with ODI rhythms, McCullum should take some credit for creating an atmosphere which allows Buttler to remain focused for what could be his final meaningful shot at an ICC global trophy.
With the series tied at 1-1, a fourth Test takes place this week in Lahore with high stakes for both sides as they look to secure their place in the final and build an unassailable lead.

And with both sides continuing to produce outstanding players on both sides, future England vs Pakistan matches will only add further intrigue and intensity into this longstanding rivalry.
England have chosen a different look team to tour Pakistan this time around. While Ben Stokes, Chris Woakes and Mark Wood remain part of their lineup, Jason Roy and Alex Hales were not included due to a combination of factors including injury or the Covid-19 virus.
However, England remains capable of creating issues for Pakistan in Test cricket matches with their mixture of young and experienced players making them a formidable adversary in Test matches.
England’s bowlers have also been in excellent form. Shan Masood and Luke Wood both took six wickets each while Mohammad Amir bagged seven; Amir’s impressive six-wicket haul came despite bowling his full quota of overs.
Pakistan bowlers also had an excellent day: Asad Shakeel and Zahid Mahmood each took two wickets while Mohammad Rizwan took three. Scotland managed some good batting performances from Finlay Jones and Manu Saraswat but could only ever total an under-par total on Harare’s seamer-friendly surface.
Pakistan won by six wickets to build confidence going into their final Test match against England at Gaddafi Stadium, Lahore on Monday – giving both sides hope of reaching the quarter finals of this tournament.
