Australia and England will meet for an upcoming Test series that marks Australia’s first time against England since their historic 16-0 Women’s Ashes win at Lord’s in 2017. They’re set to meet for their inaugural day-night Test match in Indore; which promises a close contest. Both sides have recently found success against each other – Australia winning three of four Test matches against England since 2016 while their counterparts only managed one win out of five tests played between them since 2014.
Australia began their series with an emphatic victory at North Sydney Oval, thanks to an outstanding innings from Annabel Sutherland and Ash Gardner at fourth wicket – sharing an unbeaten 177-run partnership for four wickets with almost 10 overs to spare! Australia defeated England 9 wickets with almost 10 overs remaining remaining for them to defend.
Once England lost both openers quickly, England lost five wickets quickly before their innings was complete, as Sutherland and Gardner proved unstoppable in reaching 100 runs during Women’s World Cup fixtures for Australia. Their partnership proved irrepressible in the final phase.
England’s best chance at saving the game lay with their spinners; unfortunately, King was outstanding, conceding only six runs over her ten overs with an amazing 4.7 degrees of turn induced numerous dot balls that prevented England from rotating the strike and making any impact with their bat.
Australia started off their batting strongly, with Sutherland chipping Dean over her bowler’s head for four to reach 50 and Gardner hitting the first ball of her over for two as they both progressed toward 100 runs each.
Australia vs England T20 Series
Australia have dashed England’s hopes of an Ashes series draw with an emphatic victory in Canberra’s second Twenty20 international by six wickets, highlighted by Meg Lanning’s unbeaten 133 from 63 balls as the hosts defeated their adversary with power and skill.
Although Australia experienced some early batting struggles in their top order, their depth with the bat came through when Annabel Sutherland and Ash Gardner displayed remarkable innings-defining skills against England bowlers to record an astonishing 180-run fifth wicket stand that took just 148 balls – it marked the highest fifth-wicket stand ever seen at any T20 World Cup tournament and helped Australia secure four of their six victories at this tournament so far.
After an early England collapse, Australia made steady progress and were in control with three overs left in their innings. England made a valiant comeback and brought it close at one stage when Danni Wyatt hit Kate Cross’ first over to Nat Sciver at midwicket and Tammy Beaumont hit back by pulling one into her stumps looking for quick runs. However, Australia held their nerve and eventually won by six wickets with six balls remaining to spare in their innings.
England struggled under England’s spin spinners Sophie Ecclestone and Lydia Greenfield as each was hit for over 11 runs an over – Greenfield hitting two sixes off her final ball of an over. Together they produced all runs scored between overs 21-30 as England tried their hardest to level the series 1-1.
Rain finally brought play to a halt in the final over, but England could not take advantage as Australia reached their target with seven balls remaining – marking their first clean sweep in multi-format series since 2015. Australia extended their record run of consecutive T20 wins to nine.
