1. 1985 AFC Championship Game
After joining the American Football League (AFL) in 1966, they were placed in the Eastern Division alongside Patriots, becoming division rivals. Following AFL-NFL merger, these two teams met annually in AFC Championship Game competition.
New England used an aggressive defensive performance to win their inaugural AFC title. New England running back Craig James amassed 255 yards rushing while their possession spanned more than 20 minutes of game play.
On the opening play of the second quarter, Patriots safety Jim Bowman recovered a muffed punt by Los Angeles returner Fulton Walker to spark a 52-yard scoring drive that culminated with quarterback Tony Eason throwing a 14-yard touchdown pass to tight end Lin Dawson for a 14-yard score – it was the only point scored during either half. New England then continued its dominant play post-break by recording multiple sacks and turnovers against an offense which ranked first in NFL regular season in terms of fewest turnovers lost per regular season.
2. 1993 AFC Championship Game
In this matchup between the Patriots and Dolphins in 1990s, two iconic quarterbacks emerged: Dan Marino for the Patriots and Drew Bledsoe for the Dolphins; both appeared in at least one Super Bowl during their time on each team and helped create an intense rivalry between themselves.
New England began the game strong and took an early 14-0 lead with a flea flicker to Efton Chism III for 35 yards, but Miami could only respond with their longest drive of the game during which runs and passes were used in an attempt to come back into contention in the first half.
On 3rd-and-1 for the Patriots defense, Corey Durden made an impactful play to force Miami to settle for a field goal. While their offense began gaining steam at the beginning of the second half, third-and-goal from 1-yard line attempt by Corey Schooler was stopped, forcing a punt.
3. 1999 AFC Championship Game
The 1999 AFC Championship Game featured two of the finest teams in the NFL. The Jaguars had recently completed a remarkable season as an expansion team – racking up most victories ever for an expansion team!
The Patriots began the first half with three-and-out but gained momentum when Corey Durden stopped TreVeyon Henderson on 4th-and-1 run play stop. Andy Borregales then kicked a 59-yard field goal to give New England the lead at halftime.
Rhamondre Stevenson would add to New England’s lead when he ran 35 yards straight up the middle for a touchdown, giving them a 31-10 advantage at halftime and giving their defense ample opportunity to force two turnovers (fumble and interception) that resulted in two more turnovers against Jacksonville in the final period, ultimately sealing their 28-10 triumph.
4. 2000 AFC Championship Game
Even with one of the worst defenses in league history, New England still managed to find a way to win this game and advance to Super Bowl 52. They only scored 17 points overall but takeaways were enough for victory.
Rhamondre Stevenson helped set off a quick start for the Patriots with his first of two touchdowns on the day, connecting on a flea flicker pass from 35 yards out with Efton Chism III for 14-0 lead with just under one minute remaining in the first quarter.
Miami’s defense had some difficulty keeping New England under control early, but thanks to a Morgan Moses holding penalty and Jahvid Wright fumble, they took control at New England’s 37-yard line and kicked Andy Borregales’ field goal resulting in 17-10 score at halftime.
5. 2001 AFC Championship Game
New England prevailed decisively in their final Heinz Field matchup before its demolition, dominating an Miami Dolphins team which had defeated them handily earlier. New England led early, and even after quarterback Drew Bledsoe suffered an injury (that might have been reversed under an odd interpretation of what would become known as “Tuck Rule”) Tom Brady took charge and scored two touchdown passes himself.
Lamar Smith outscored Lamar Carr in terms of running yards on Saturday and totaled 1,009 for the season – becoming only the second RB ever to do so in an AFC Championship Game since 2022! Ty Law had his first interception for New England here while Adam Vinatieri scored all their points.
6. 2002 AFC Championship Game
The final regular-season meeting between the Patriots and Dolphins was an epic battle that went all the way into overtime. Tied at game’s end, Tom Brady ultimately connected with Antowain Smith for a winning lateral pass to secure victory – marking their first-ever overtime result against each other since franchise history began.
As New England faced an insurmountable deficit to start the second half, their defense responded with impressive resilience. From their own 32, Brady completed four passes – four to Patten for four yards and six passes each to Edwards and Fauria for 6 and 20 yards to set up Fauria’s 3-yard touchdown reception. They got another chance when Mare missed his field goal attempt from 47 yards; New England were poised for an unlikely comeback that nearly worked out of all odds!
7. 2003 AFC Championship Game
After an even first quarter with both teams trading punts, the Patriots would make their first big play when Rhamondre Stevenson scored on a 56-yard Wildcat formation touchdown run he took directly himself. Their defense held firm as well, forcing a turnover on downs due to Morgan Moses holding penalty and Jaylen Wright fumbling on fourth down and leading to a turnover on downs for Miami.
Andy Borregales made the most of a short field by scoring with a 59-yard field goal to give New England an 18-3 lead at halftime. Following three-and-out play from Miami Dolphins’ offense, Jack Gibbens forced and recovered by Elijah Ponder was responsible for forcing a fumble forced by Patriots’ defense which led to another scoring drive from their next possession ending with Vinatieri field goal kick.
8. 2004 AFC Championship Game
New England entered this matchup as favorites after suffering two key losses to Pittsburgh in running back Corey Dillon and cornerback Ty Law, with Ben Roethlisberger enjoying an outstanding regular season which saw him shatter Dan Marino’s rookie records and establish himself as one of the premier quarterbacks.
The Patriots made an early statement with their score from Rhamondre Stevenson’s touchdown run using Wildcat formation with Stevenson taking direct snap to make this play.
The Dolphins would respond with an offensive drive of their own, but on third down Corey Dillon was stopped short for a loss on 3rd and 1; therefore Miami was forced to settle for a field goal as they closed out their rivalry between Drew Bledsoe and Dan Marino.
9. 2006 AFC Championship Game
In this game, the Patriots defeated the Dolphins decisively – scoring their largest victory ever and becoming the first team ever to overcome a 24-point deficit to win an NFL Championship game.
The Patriots opened scoring with an extended drive that resulted in Rhamondre Stevenson scoring on his second touchdown run of the game. Meanwhile, their defense produced two takeaways: Jack Gibbens forced a fumble that Elijah Ponder recovered for Jack Gibbens while Jaylinn Hawkins intercepted another pass from opponents.
Following a fourth-down red zone stop, New England’s offense quickly responded with another scoring drive. Maye hit Efton Chism III for 35 yards before hitting Stevenson open for the touchdown – Borregales added a 59-yard field goal at halftime giving New England an edge. New England continued their aggressive play through third quarter as well converting 3rd and 1 with a 20-yard pass to Kayshon Boutte to keep New England ahead.
10. 2007 AFC Championship Game
The New England Patriots entered this matchup as heavy favorites. They had defeated the Miami Dolphins with ease at home and were intent on finishing an unblemished regular season, hoping that would result in their first ever Super Bowl berth. Their goal was met, sending them on their way towards victory!
The Patriots wasted no time in asserting themselves, scoring on their opening drive of the game with Rhamondre Stevenson powering into the end zone on a fly-flick from quarterback Drake Maye for an early 7-0 lead under two minutes into play.
Defense was on display throughout, with two key takeaways — a forced fumble by Jack Gibbens and an interception from Jaylinn Hawkins — providing two major takeaways that kept rookie quarterback Quinn Ewers and the Dolphins off-balance.
