1. Miami Dolphins vs Indianapolis Colts
Miami was absolutely humiliated in the opening half. Their opponents outclassed and outcoached them at every turn; at no time did they appear competitive during that quarter. Following several punts from Colts punter Ryan Hewitt, they quickly moved downfield, scoring on Daniel Jones to rookie tight end Tyler Warren for a score before two-point conversion and Shrader kicked a field goal before halftime to make it 20-0 for Indianapolis.
On their opening drive of the second half, the Dolphins attempted to gain momentum by employing Malik Washington and Jaylen Waddle as runners and Ollie Gordon and De’Von Achane as receivers for short passes from Tagovailoa; however, Laiatu Latu made history by reading Tagovailoa’s intended target (Malik Washington) perfectly and turning direction quickly enough to grab an interception out of midair before giving it back.
Indianapolis took control at Miami’s 42-yard line following their turnover, and were methodical on their next drive, alternating between run and pass play with ease. Rookie running back Jonathan Taylor picked up some yards on the ground while passes to rookie wide receiver Alec Pierce kept pressure high as did a sack from Dolphins linebacker Bradley Chubb’s presence on defense.
On their last drive of the third quarter, Indianapolis returned to Miami’s red zone quickly and efficiently with a quick and effective drive that featured a nine-yard pass to Tyreek Hill and seven yards scramble by Jones to bring them within six yards of scoring; however, on 4th-and-goal Shrader was forced to settle for a 28-yard field goal; marking their only scoring drive of the night.
4. Miami Dolphins vs Indianapolis Colts
Mike McDaniel’s Dolphins entered Sunday’s matchup against Indianapolis hoping to build on last season’s success, but turnovers and missed opportunities proved too much for them to overcome. They fell 33-8 against an efficient Colts offense led by Daniel Jones as well as an aggressive running game which averaged over five yards per carry.
Indianapolis took control in the first half as quarterback Andrew Jones threw for two touchdowns while turning all seven possessions into points. Miami finally broke through when running back De’Von Achane scored on fourth down from 11-yard line, but Indianapolis quickly countered with kicker Spencer Shrader’s 48-yard field goal attempt.
On Miami’s initial play of the second quarter, linebacker Jaelan Phillips ran past Colts right tackle Braden Smith and forced Jones to shuffle his feet as he prepared to release the ball – leaving him vulnerable against Bradley Chubb’s speedy rush and eventually being tackled to the ground for Miami’s inaugural sack of 2018.
Dolphins defensive players were only successful in stopping one Indianapolis drive all game long, while their defense remained an abject mess when not on the field with their offense. Starting defensive lineman James Daniels exited with a pectoral injury on their third offensive play while cornerback Storm Duck left late in the first half with an ankle ailment.
5. Miami Dolphins vs Indianapolis Colts
Mike McDaniel witnessed in disbelief as his Miami Dolphins team collapsed under Indianapolis Colts quarterback Daniel Jones’ pressure, surrendering two turnovers and fumbling in the opening quarter for an early 20-0 deficit; they never recovered after halftime and did not score one point more.
The first turnover occurred when Jones attempted a deep pass to wide receiver Michael Pittman Jr. but was met by linebacker Bradley Chubb, who stripped it away from him and caused another turnover — a fumble by running back Jonathan Taylor that was collected by cornerback Camryn Bynum.
Once things began to unravel for the Dolphins, things quickly went from bad to worse. With an opportunity to force a punt on their next drive, four-time Pro Bowler Matt Judon was called for running into kicker Andrew Gooch extending their drive further and enabling Indianapolis Colts score another field goal.
On a day when they hoped to honor former owner and CEO Jim Irsay’s death earlier this week, everything that could possibly go wrong for the Dolphins did: their defense leaked while special teams performed poorly.
That doesn’t excuse anything; these are simply facts, and must be addressed for the Dolphins to improve upon last season’s 2-6 finish and reach the playoffs again this season.
